Who We Were
The PolyOne Corporation
In 2000 PolyOne became the world's largest polymer services company, providing customers with a single source for polymer, elastomer, colorant and additive products. The Elastomers and Performance Additives Group as part of PolyOne’s company maintained its leadership role in the manufacture of elastomer and chemical compounds for the rubber industry until August 2004 when the division was purchased by Lion Chemical Capital LLC and ACI Capital Co., Inc.
M.A. Rubber Compounding
In 1996, M.A. Hanna consolidated the management, operations and sales of Colonial, Burton and Global Processing and named the new division M.A. Hanna Rubber Compounding. The subsequent acquisitions of Chase Elastomer and Harwick Chemical Manufacturing were also placed under this business unit umbrella. When Hanna and Geon merged in 2000, this business became known as PolyOne Elastomers & Performance Additives.
Chase Elastomer
Chase Elastomer was founded in Arlington, Texas by Tom Chase in 1983 for the purpose of providing roll compounds to small and medium size roller manufacturers. In an effort to diversify its product portfolio, Chase Elastomer purchased Chicago-based Stereotype Equipment Company in 1989. In 1991, Chase Elastomer acquired Polymer Processors, another Chicago-based rubber compounder which primarily focused on the roller market. The two operations were merged into one site in Chicago in 1992.
In late 1996, the business was sold to the M.A. Hanna Company and became part of the M.A. Hanna Rubber Compounding business.
Harwick Chemical Manufacturing Company
Harwick Chemical Manufacturing Company has roots in the rubber chemical industry dating back to 1937. Harwick Chemical Manufacturing Company earned its prominence through a wide range of high-quality product and technology platforms. Its brands and offerings were carried over when they became part of M.A. Hanna Company in 1997.
Colonial Rubber Works
Colonial Rubber Works was founded in 1946 in Logansport, Indiana by Danal Hotaling and Willard Wickersham. The company's primary business was the manufacture of sponge rubber parts, mostly for the automotive industry. Colonial's growth in compounding gained momentum when Allen Industries acquired it in 1961 and subsequently by Dayco Corporation in 1968. Under Dayco's ownership, the compounding business expanded rapidly to a two-plant operation and by the early 70's, Colonial had distinguished itself as the largest custom rubber compounder in the world.
In 1986, Dayco sold off its hose and belt businesses to Armstrong Rubber and consolidated the remaining business units under the Day International name. Day International was subsequently purchased in 1987 by the M A Hanna Company and became part of M.A. Hanna Rubber Compounding in 1996.
Burton Rubber Processing
Burton Rubber Processing was originally incorporated in 1951 in Burton, Ohio as Ferry Rubber, owned by Tom Ferry and Andy Miller. The Company was sold in 1957 to Bob Hrebek, Fred Nonneman and Charles Carroll and renamed Burton Rubber Processing. The initial purpose of the business was to provide custom compounds to parts producers owned by Hrebek and Nonneman, as well as focus on custom rubber mixing for a variety of industries in the Ohio region. Burton also started a plastics mixing operation in Macedonia, Ohio in 1965. This company was known as Mach I Compounding. Burton remained privately held until December 1986 when it became the first polymer acquisition by M.A. Hanna and became part of M.A. Hanna Rubber Compounding in 1996. Mach I Compounding transferred to the M.A. Hanna plastics business in 1996.
Global Processing
Global Processing was founded in 1979 by Fred Williams and Jerry Frazier in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Williams and Frazier saw a need on the west coast to serve the high performance compound market after working in the industry for a number of years. In 1993, Global was purchased by the M.A. Hanna Company and became a part of M.A. Hanna Rubber Compounding in 1996. This operation continues to dominate the high performance market on the west coast.
